Race To The Top Fund

The Obama Administration has created “Race to the Top” (RTTT), a package of competitive grants authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The program of $4.35 billion provides one-time grants to local states, although only 10 states are expected to be awarded, possibly fewer.

Part of the requirement for applying for the RTTT grant is that states change certain aspects of their existing education systems, namely the way they measure accountability and their methods of recruiting, training and retaining teachers to name a few. Although President Obama has good intentions, this program has sent Gov. Schwarzenegger into a frenzy trying to hurriedly change our already fragile education system without taking the time to consider the consequences.

Issues Outlook A brief discription of the Rate to the Top Program and what to watch out for!

NEA Response to Race to the Top Fund This document is a response from NEA written directly to the President Obama's Secretary of Education that applauds their efforts to improve the education system but makes very detailed suggestions on how to change the Race to the Top program in order to protect the students and teachers in the process.

CTA/NEA Position Paper NEA and CTA explain their official position on the Race to the Top Program and explain in detail the problems that this program would present in its current state.

Leg Alert CTA urges members to contact California legislators to let them know that they should look closely at the Race to the Top Program and not be too hasty in making changes to the education system before the Race to the Top Program requirements are finalized.

Sample Letter CTA's sample letter to the president and the Secretary of Education asking each of them to take a good look at the Race to the Top Program and revise the criteria for applying for grants so that legislators are not leaving the education system vulnerable simply because they are looking to receive some extra grant money.

Talking Points This document has all the information needed in order to contact local legislators and have a discussion about what needs to be considered before hastily making changes to the education system just to become eligible for grant money that is not guranteed.
