CTA Action Alert Newsletter

CTA has published the latest version of its Action Alert newsletter and is asking members to Contact five Senate Democrats and urge them to support RDA Bill to provide desperately needed school funding.

Your efforts are needed now to help persuade the five Democratic senators to vote for two trailer bills that will help protect schools against additional massive funding cuts. The bills are facing opposition from local government officials who oppose Gov. Jerry Brown’s Redevelopment Agencies (RDA) proposal to give additional funds to schools. To see how you can contact these five Senators, click here.

CTA's Tax Fairness Video on YouTube

California has long relied on mostly short-term solutions to our budget problems, which has done us no long-term favors. The health of California's public schools depends on stable tax revenues. It is time to demand action to restore fairness to the system and make sure everyone is paying their fair share. Learn more at http://www.cta.org/taxfairness.

A Message From CTA President David Sanchez

CTA Stands in Support of Educators and Public Workers in Wisconsin Fighting to Retain Right to Bargain

Burlingame - David A. Sanchez, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association, released this statement today regarding the vote Wednesday evening by Wisconsin Republicans to ram through their bill attacking working families.

“The California Teachers Association applauds the Wisconsin teachers, the firefighters, the nurses and all public employees and working families who have continued to stand up to the outright attack on the middle class by Gov. Scott Walker and a Republican-dominated Senate.  Last night’s vote to strip educators of their bargaining rights revealed the true intentions of the governor, which had nothing to do with a budget crisis and everything to do with union busting, plain and simple. Although this is a setback for the working families of Wisconsin, the Senate’s action has stirred millions of people nationwide who care about workers’ rights and are willing to join us in the fight. CTA will continue to support our colleagues in Wisconsin and we will prevail.”

Attacks on Public Education

Everyday, the debate over Charter Schools and voucher systems seems to draw more and more attention. As educators, we are all opposed to these arguments as so-called "magic bullet" solutions to underperforming schools. But when someone challenges us on our stance regarding these issues, what can we say? How do we respond to people who think that these ideas come from well meaning people with no hidden agenda? How do we prove that our "special interests" are the children we educate?

Angela Su, a school finance specialist of the California Teachers Association and Arleigh Kidd, a Region III Organizer for CTA, have developed a PowerPoint presentation that is filled with valuable facts and information compiled by CTA, NEA & AFT about those who are coming after public education and public education employees and the details about this comprehensive agenda that has been in the works for decades.  You will also find a myriad of information showing where the threats are in the US to due process rights, bargaining, dues collection, etc.

Knoweledge is power. Feel free to look through this PowerPoint presentation and empower yourself with the cold hard facts.
