Improving Classroom Education Act
Introduced For November Ballot
The California Teachers Association (CTA) and children’s advocate Rob Reiner announced the official filing of a new education initiative with the Attorney General’s office. The Improving Classroom Education Act will provide a stable funding source that will help improve our state’s K-12 classrooms and provide statewide access to voluntary universal preschool to all California children the year before they start kindergarten.
The Improving Classroom Education Act will raise more than $3 billion annually for K-12 schools and $1.5 billion for preschools by increasing the tax rate on commercial property from 1% to 1.5%. It does not raise property taxes for California’s homeowners. Look for more information on this important initiative in 2004.
Members support striking Vons workers bringing goodies and cheers every Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Want to help? For more information contact President Margie Granado at the MTA office.

TOPICS OF INTEREST THIS QUARTER
Transportation: Dan Ibarra, Director of Transportation, brought good news to the committee members concerning charges for field trips at the sites. Suva Intermediate and La Merced Intermediate submitted their end of the year transportation bills for re-evaluation and benefit by seeing their actual cost reduced significantly. Transportation has developed a chart of the various rates from the different vendors. This information is hopefully making its way to all sites. We have been informed that the department is moving towards a more uniform policy on its billing towards all school sites. Please be pro-active in checking on your field trip costs.
School Supplies: District has moved from utilizing Corporate Express to Boise Office Supplies. Mr. Sheppard explained that we will be getting 20% savings by making this switch. No one will be forced to order from this company but everyone is being encouraged to switch. The Revenue & Expense committee strongly recommended to the District that it should at the very least have a computer available to the person responsible for ordering supplies at the school sites.
Text Book Process: The District office understands the concerns of our members and is looking into opportunities to improve on the ordering and receiving end. There will be a meeting hopefully in February to review the process steps.
Facilities: Pam Johnson announced that the District has been awarded a grant for 63 million as part of Prop 47 the overcrowded schools program. This is a dollar for dollar match program. New happenings around the district: Rosewood Park Elementary is now K-5. Rosewood lost very little of its playground because of its creative use of space and two story modules. BGH is now 18 months behind schedule. SHS has added a cafeteria to its campus. MHS air conditioning project is moving along. SUI received new asphalt, new basketball courts, and a new amphitheater.
