Governor Signs STRS Pension Increase

Governor Gray Davis has signed a California Teachers Association (CTA) sponsored bill to increase pensions for elderly retired educators.

AB 135, authored by Assemblywoman Sally Havice increases the purchasing power inflation offset from 75% to 80%, so the buying power of the pension does not fall below 80% of its original value. Some 60,000 retirees, with an average age of 80, will receive an additional $90 per month , on average. Their current STRS pensions average just $13,000 per year, because they retired years ago on modest salaries.

CTA Endorses Governor Davis

The delegates of the CTA State Council of Education voted to endorse Governor Gray Davis for re-election. In other endorsements, the CTA State Council backed these statewide candidates:

Lieutenant Governor: Cruz Bustamante
Attorney General: Bill Lockyear
State Treasurer: Phillip Angelides
State Supt. Of Public Instruction: Jack OíConnell
State Controller: Steve Westly

Governor Appoints Teacher Advocate to State Board of Education

CTA Assistant Executive Director Joe NuÀez was appointed by the Governor to the State Board of Education. NuÀez will bring a teacher perspective to the Board.

A third generation Mexican-American, NuÀez, age 48, was born in Guadalupe, California. He attended public schools in Guadalupe and Santa Maria. NuÀez has worked for CTA since 1995.

The Association and the District encourage all employees to participate in the democratic process of voting if there is an election in your precinct. The voting precincts are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
