Working Together to
Eliminate the Social Security Offset

Many membersí have discovered that their retirement benefits will be less than planned on because of two provisions in federal law that reduce a personís Social Security benefits if they are also receiving a public pension, such as STRS. These two laws are the Governmental Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). Both CTA and NEA are working to eliminate these two provisions.

In order to end this discrimination against those who have chosen to serve their communities or country in public jobs, we must convince Congress to pass critical bills.

Members of Congress should support passage of bipartisan legislation (H.R. 66 and S.611), which would eliminate the GPO for the first $1,200 of combined monthly benefits. This legislation is an important immediate step toward the ultimate solutionńtotal repeal of the offset. Congress should also pass H.R. 848, which eliminates WEP.

Contact a Building Rep for more information. A call or letter to your Senator and Congress Member could make the difference!
