HELP WANTED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
DEFEAT PROPOSITIONS 226 & 227

We desperately need volunteers to staff the telephone banks through election day, Tuesday, June 2. Very few members have actually come to the MTA to phone bank against these very vicious anti-education initiatives Propositions 226 & 227. So far the participation of members has been far less than what is needed to defeat Propositions 226 & 227. MTA's assignment in the campaign is to make two phone calls per member. In other words we must contact almost 3000 voters. Thus far a handful of members have taken the burden for the entire Association.

DIALING FOR DOLLARS - $100 RAFFLE

Earn a raffle ticket for every hour volunteered at the MTA phone banks. A winning ticket will be pulled on Tuesday, June 9 at the Council meeting. Board member Tom Calderon has donated a $100 prize.

REMIND FRIENDS & FAMILY TO VOTE

Send a post card to a friend or family member encouraging them to vote No on the Propositions. Your Building Rep will begin distributing post cards on Wednesday, May 20. The cards are printed with a No on Proposition 226 & 227 message. Members are encouraged to personalize the post cards as well. Return the post cards to the MTA office for postage.

Vote-June 2

DANGER - PROPOSITION 226

Proposition 226 will impair CTA's lobbying program. It will make it all but impossible to advocate for public education in the state legislature. CTA's efforts in the past have
Increased per-student spending by $800 million in 1997 Won support for increased funding for class size reduction.
Negotiated a settlement of CTA v. Gould which gained public schools nearly $1 billion dollars each year after 1996. Contributed to Bond EE, Board Member Tom Calderon, and Board Vice President Richard Adams.

STOP PROPOSITION 227

Proposition 227 appropriates $50 million per year for a new spending program - not our schools, but to teach English to adults if they pledge to provide tutoring to kids in their community. Students won't learn English that way! There is no accountability for this $50 million a year new spending program. And the money is NOT going to our schools! The League of Women Voters opposes 227.

In mid-March, the State Board of Education ended mandatory bilingual education. Local schools can now use different methods for teaching English. Proposition 227 bans all local programs - even the best ones - and imposes ONE state mandate, a one-size-fits-all curriculum. We know that never works! And, the State Legislative Analyst says "the impact on individual school districts could vary significantly by district ... the costs to the state would likely reduce spending on other school programs by a like amount." The California PTA opposes 227.
