DAY OF THE TEACHER
THIS WEDNESDAY
|
 |
Numerous communities, school districts and businesses
around the state will
celebrate Day of the Teacher on Wednesday, May 12. This marks the sixteenth
anniversary of the day established to give special recognition to teachers
for their contributions to education and the lives of California's children.
CTA and the Association of Mexican American Educators (AMAE) sponsored the
bill proclaiming The Day of the Teacher. It was written by Senator Joseph
Montoya (D-El Monte) and adopted in 1982 as Senate Bill 1546. The California
celebration was patterned after the similar El Dia del Maestro celebrations
held in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
