Day of the Teacher will be observed Wednesday, May 8. This special observance was established 20 years ago to honor teachers and the teaching profession in California.

The California Teachers Association (CTA) and the Association of Mexican American Educators (AMAE) sponsored the bill proclaiming Day of the Teacher. Senator Joseph Montoya wrote the bill and it was adopted in 1982 as Senate Bill 1546. California has patterned its celebration after the traditional El Dia del Maestro festivities observed in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
The theme of this yearís observance is Great Teaching Is Never Forgotten.

The Association is honoring its members with MTA lapel pins attached to book marks.

Wearing the new MTA logo pin will display our pride in the unforgettable teaching accomplished by our members and our pride in the professional standards we continue to attain and improve in the Montebello Teachers Association.

The Association and the District have entered into many memorandums of understanding (MOUs) at the request of individual school staffs. Most MOUs refer to the banking of minutes. Faculties have chosen to teach additional minutes on certain days for more planning time on other days.

Faculties must request MOU's from the Association no later than Friday, May 31. Principals must also request an MOU from the District through Janet Torncelloís office. Principalís requests are due no later than Wednesday, May 15 with an absolute deadline of Friday, May 31.

The specific conditions for the waiver and a bell schedule must be included in the request.

For more information contact Executive Director Kathy Køhn and review the MTA Site Specific Waiver Policy.
