Improving Education Act Will Not Be On The Ballot
The California Teachers Association (CTA) Officers and Board of Directors voted April 8 not to submit the Improving Education Act initiative for the November ballot. CTA reports that as a result of members’ efforts, we would have exceeded our signature collection goal and easily qualified the initiative. The decision not to file was based on an appraisal of the changes in the context of the November election. Twelve other initiatives were being qualified for the ballot, and four of the initiatives sought to increase taxes. Thus, our initiative would be extremely difficult to pass.
El Dia de los Niños, a holiday celebrating the value of Latino and all children, is April 30.
The Latin American holiday was initiated in 1999. Cities throughout the State have committed to creating parades, book festivals, health fairs and other special events promoting the well-being of children. The group sponsoring this day of celebration is the National Latino Children’s Institute.
The California Legislature passed a resolution to share in the establishment of El Dia de los Niños April 30, 1999 and subsequent years. Some information about El Dia de los Niños, including event ideas, and more information about this special day that celebrates children, are available at www.nlci.org.
