FIRST ANNUAL WOMEN'S ISSUES
CONFERENCE
The NEA's Women's Caucus announces the first
annual Women's Issues Conference Friday -
Sunday, May 22-24
. Workshops will include:
violence against women and children, women's health
care, women's history, and political update. The
registration fee is $75. Send registration inquiries to
Amy Tsubokawa; 20922 Callaway Avenue;
Lakewood, CA 90715.
TWO TERRIBLE PROPOSITIONS
NO ON 226 AND 227
Two terrible initiatives will be on the June ballot.
Proposition 226 is a Right Wing assault on labor
unions and political involvement. Millions of dollars
of out of State funds have been collected to fund this
initiative that would make it illegal to have payroll
deduction for political contributions. The reason
behind this initiative is that the California Teachers
Association (CTA) is too successful. Laws like
Proposition 98 have guaranteed funding for schools
and improved teacher salaries. The proponents of
Proposition 226 would like teachers to have no
political clout in Sacramento. Vote no on
Proposition 226
. Proposition 227 is the anti-
bilingual initiative. It would make teachers legally
liable if a language other than English were spoken in
the classroom. This would be a very dangerous law
against classroom teacher if it were to pass.

SCHOOL BOND CAMPAIGN IS A SUCCESS
YES ON EE

The Committee to Rebuild Our Schools has been working hard for a positive turnout at the April 14 election. The
bond will impact every student and every employee in the District. Among other things, the bond will pay to air
condition all schools, install telephones in all classrooms, and build a new school.
Fund raising has been an important aspect of the campaign thus far. The Association of Montebello School
Administrators (AMSA) raised $11,000 from personal donations from school administrators. Site committees are
currently involved in local fund raising. Volunteers are now being sought for telephone banks. Each school will
be asked to staff the telephone for a couple of nights in March and April.
