State Monitors Erasures on STAR Test
The California Department of Education (CDE) along with local school districts, are responsible for implementing a high quality and meaningful assessment and accountability system. The CDE meets this responsibility, in part, by requiring the State's Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program contractor to complete an electronic analysis of student answer documents for the California Standards Tests (CSTs) and the California Achievement Tests (CAT/6 Survey) to determine if there are any significant irregularities in the student response patterns.
Specifically, the contractor is able to measure the extent to which a response was erased and changed to a different answer. By tracking instances where the number and pattern of student erasures far exceeds what usually occurs during testing, the State can identify specific classrooms in which some type of irregular test administration may have occurred.
